About the RAD

The RAD, or the Royal Academy of Dance, is one of the most respected dance teaching organisations in the world. It was founded in Britain nearly 100 years ago; its headquarters and teacher training college are in London. Its syllabus is taught throughout the UK, and in many other countries worldwide. It aims to provide a complete training in classical ballet for children and students, through a system of examinations. Its teachers are required to undergo rigorous training and examination in order to achieve registered status.

The graded exams are designed primarily for the once-a-week child, from pre-school through to senior level. There are also vocational exams intended for those who wish to have a career in dance. These latter exams are taken by children at professional dance schools like The Royal Ballet School, and the Elmhurst Ballet School, and are thus beyond the range of many children.

(We at Elvet Ballet School are always very proud of our pupils who are successful in these exams, as some are – over the past 2 years we have had four such students.)
