Elvet Ballet School

About Us

The Elvet Ballet School was first established in Durham City over 30 years ago by Sybil Stewart ARAD, a former professional dancer. At the time she was living in New Elvet, hence its name.

The school has had various locations within the city centre, but it has always maintained the same high standard of teaching. Over the years many hundreds of children have obtained successes in RAD ballet graded and vocational examinations, and have performed in school productions which include The Nutcracker, Coppélia, and The Little Mermaid.

Miss Stewart finally retired in the summer of 2006, but the school continues to be run by Yvonne Beck, her assistant for many years. It is moving to new premises in September 2006.

All teachers are fully registered RAD teachers.

Mrs Mary Retief has taught extensively abroad and in the UK, and has many years of experience.

Miss Jade Harrison holds the RAD CBTS certicate, and has her own school as well as teaching for us.
